Roman moved closer and found a spot in the shadows behind a metal barrel where he could peer through the door Morgan had left open. He arrived in time to see the first man she’d approached return with two other men. Big men. Men who didn’t look happy to see her. His cold hands fisted in his pockets. He’d charge in there and take every one of them down if they hurt Morgan.

He couldn’t hear more than mumbles from Morgan...which fit her fake-humbled persona. One of the men jerked a nod and sent a sharp glance toward the open door. He stomped over to close the door while the other two men seized Morgan under her arms.

Roman hunched down behind the barrel, praying he wouldn’t be spotted. Once the door closed with a metallic clang, he moved down the wall to a high window and peeked around the edge. Everything in Roman quailed when saw the men drag Morgan into the front office and shut the door. If not for the office’s large window that looked out into the cavernous warehouse, he’d have busted down the door and swept Morgan away from the site, their fact-finding mission be damned. But through the window, he could keep tabs on what was unfolding, even if he couldn’t hear what was being said.

After a moment, he sneaked back to the door Morgan had used and cracked it open, slipping inside. He kept close to the wall as he sidled deeper into the warehouse, sneaking closer to the office, hoping to overhear something. Sweeping his gaze from one corner of the dim warehouse to the next as his eyes adjusted to the lower light, he kept watch for workers who might spot him and sound the alarm.

Business was slow, though. Whether because it was near Christmas or because they typically worked a skeleton crew, he couldn’t decide. He saw no sign of the building materials Tim had mentioned. Perhaps those stockpiles had been a fluke? He heard a door squeak and shrank back behind a vending machine as a guy in coveralls left a room to the right of the door where the men had taken Morgan, climbed in the cab of a truck and drove away. A woman exited next, her purse over her arm, coat in hand, and disappeared in the other direction down a short hall.

The door the woman had exited through remained open, and curiosity bit Roman hard. Staying below the edge of the large window of the main office, he duck-waddled to the open door, rose to his feet and peered inside. The desk inside held a double computer screen and was cluttered with folders and stacks of papers and surrounded by metal file cabinets. The fluorescent tube light overhead hummed—the only sound he heard other than the rumble of indistinct male voices from the next office.

He gritted his teeth, praying Morgan was all right, then slipped into the empty office and quietly closed the door. He moved to the desk and scanned the files.
